On February 13th Dr. Francis Burroughs came to the Parish Hall to talk to the Club about Historic Front Gardens. He spoke well with some dry humour and he concentrated upon the vast expanses that provided the outlook from the front doors of the great stately homes. Structure, form and texture were more important than colour, even though most properties had a large labour force. Dr. Burroughs offered the Stourhead landscape as a classic example and raised the interesting point that a lot of the effort in past times was not for immediate effect. We are now enjoying the results of earth moved and trees planted several centuries ago. Immediately post-creation, many of the National Trust vistas that we now enjoy would have appeared very raw and distinctly patchy.
